Another ultrasound and a heartbeat

I went to get a 6 week ultrasound the day before I left for 2 weeks of traveling, and am finally getting around to updating you all about it.  Pregnancy nausea, traveling, and a cold have slowed me down a bit…

I did have a nice holiday vacation, despite some complications.  I went early to spend a little extra time with my family, and Rich was supposed to follow.  He never made it, thanks to all the cancellations from the Denver snow storm.  We finally met up in NC, where his family lives, after even more travel problems.  Adding to the travel drama, when we got home, we couldn’t even stay in our own house!  The gas company had let our propane tank run empty, so the pilots went out, and the little bit of remaining gas leaked out and filled the house.  It took a day with the windows open and fans going to get the gas out and the house safe again, so even though we were in our hometown, we were still sleeping out of suitcases.

But now that we’re finally back, here’s the update.  The ultrasound was both frustrating and reassuring.  Because our one and only local OB doesn’t have a transvaginal ultrasound machine, it was done at our tiny local hospital, and the ultrasound tech was a visiting radiologist who was not familiar with the policies of the local hospital.  She wasn’t sure if she was allowed to tell us anything, and I wasn’t able to view the screen during the procedure.  So I got frustrated, because the whole point of this ultrasound was for us to get reassurance that this pregnancy was progressing properly, and she wouldn’t tell us anything!  Luckily, Rich came along and was able to get a nice view and tell me what he could see.  When I asked if he could see the “thingy”, he reassured me that he could clearly see a form in the gestational sac. The tech knew I was anxious, and I loved her when she turned the speakers up on the computer so we could hear the heartbeat.  I felt so much better!  She also left the data screen up on the computer when she checked in with the senior tech, so we could see that the gestational age was right where it should be.  Very comforting.

We asked for a copy of the ultrasound image, and Rich was able to pick it up a few days later.  Here’s what Rich is so sweetly calling “Thingy!”
