But I want to know the gender!

Last Friday I had another followup visit with small town doc, and everything seems to be moving along well. So well, in fact, that there is no need for an ultrasound. This is good news, of course, but I want to know if we’re having a boy or a girl! I had a dream about a baby boy a few nights ago, but that’s following a baby girl dream a few weeks before that, so my dreams are certainly not a help.

We decided to go ahead with the AFP testing, which is another blood test that looks for birth defects. We’re not really worried about anything; the first trimester screening was pretty reassuring, but if the results come back positive, we get an ultrasound (and a chance to see if they can determine gender). So I’ll get my blood drawn on Monday and we’ll wait for the results.

I’ve been having headaches pretty frequently for a few months now, so we also discussed that with the doctor. He believes they are vascular headaches, which are not unusual in pregnancy. One of my sisters had a problem with them as well, and she dealt with them by switching from prenatal vitamins to children’s vitamins. Since my diet is pretty healthy, the doc suggested we eliminate the vitamins for a while to see if my headaches improve. If they do, I can try another brand, or a children’s vitamin, with the possibility of adding a folate, iron and a calcium supplement if I want reassurance that I’m getting everything I need. So far, so good. No headaches!

Now all I need is to know if I should be shopping pink or blue! Actually, I’ll probably try for lots of generic things, just to be safe, but I still want to know.
