Vasectomy reversal or IVF?

Dr. Richard Schoor, a male infertility specialist in Smithtown, NY, has posted on the question of which is more cost-effective, vasectomy reversal or in vitro fertilization (IVF). In it, he gives these startling figures: One round of IVF costs anywhere from $12,000 to $20,000. And this is per attempt. Each attempt has a 25% to [...]

Success rate of second vasectomy reversal

I’ve been wondering about our next steps if Rich’s post-vasectomy reversal sperm count doesn’t improve over his last semen analysis results.  One option is intracytoplasmic sperm injection or ICSI, another is a second attempt at vasectomy reversal. Of course, we could also try with donor sperm, or move towards adoption.  But I want to exhaust all [...]

Intrauterine insemination (IUI)

What are the options if a vasectomy reversal isn't succesful? When the first semen analysis results came back low, we instantly thought about the worst case scenarios — IVF, sperm donors, adoption. Fortunately, we were able to meet with our doctor soon thereafter, and he reassured us that we had other options and that there [...]

Risks of multiple birth pregnancies

Earlier this month, we reported that doctors at John Hopkins had determined that sperm harvesting during vasectomy reversal was not cost effective. Today's post highlights recent comments by one of the study's authors. What interested me here were some of the comments on higher order pregancies: "…the pregnancy rates had increased since earlier cost analysis [...]

Sperm protein implicated in failed IVF

Immucon has announced that it is now offering the detection of protein P34H on the surface of the sperm through all fertility centers and andrology labs located in North America. A recent study involving three fertility centers and which results are being published this month in Fertility & Sterility, reveals that the lack of protein [...]

Sperm harvesting during vasectomy reversal not cost effective

Researchers at John Hopkins have determined that sperm harvesting and cryoperservation during vasectomy reversal is not cost effective. Costs were compared to sperm harvesting at the time of IVF, where vasectomy reversal was unsuccessful. Median costs were as follows: Sperm harvesting and cryopreservation at vasovasostomy – $1765 Sperm harvesting and cryopreservation at vasoepididymostomy – $1209 [...]

Thinking ahead: Freezing sperm for IVF

So what if the vasectomy reversal doesn’t work? In certain situations, sperm can be extracted for freezing, to provide an option for future in vitro fertilization (IVF). Whether or not this can be done depends on the type of vasectomy reversal performed. If it’s a vasovasectomy, they cannot recover sperm during the surgery (apparently there [...]
