Celiac disease and TTC
A few years ago, my brother was diagnosed with Celiac disease. People with this disease have difficulty processing gluten (which is in wheat and most grains) and as a result, often have digestive problems. My brother has always been super skinny, which it turns out was because he was not able to get adequate nutrition because of the damage to his digestive system from the gluten. He’s now on a gluten free diet and has gained weight and is feeling much better.
Celiac diseasee is genetic, and my brother recently decided to have his son tested for Celiac disease, since my nephew was not growing normally. My nephew tested positive, so they tested their other children as well. Their daughter also tested positive, despite not showing any symptoms. Then my sister decided to get tested. She’s certainly not underweight and didn’t have the typical celiac symptoms, but she tested positive as well.
My sister-in-law has been doing quite a bit of reading on Celiac disease, since her husband and two of her children have it, and she’s encouraging everyone in the family to get tested. Apparently, it’s more common than doctors used to think for people to have celiac’s disease but not show the typical symptoms of digestive distress.
Interestingly, there is a link between Celiac disease and miscarriage. I don’t think I have any symptoms of Celiac disease, although my friend Nat has been trying to convince me that I have Celiac disease for years. Following my recent miscarriage, I’m looking for answers, and with more and more people in my family testing positive for Celiac disease, I’m now willing to consider that I might have it. Yesterday I saw my doctor and he was happy to have the blood work done to check for Celiac disease, citing my extensive family history. It takes a while to get the results back, so I’ll let you know in a week or two what they are!
