Post-vasectomy reversal care
Well, it’s been eight days, and things are healing nicely down there. I thought this might be a good time to review the post-vasectomy reversal care instructions I was given. The preceding link has the full regime provided by my doctor, but here are the highlights:
- The several hour drive home was interesting, since I had to have ice applied to the scrotal area every two hours. We were told to keep this up for the first 30 hours after surgery.
- This is followed by heat, applied one to three times a day for up to ten days, beginning the third morning after surgery.
- What every guy is going to want to know…when can I have sex? My doctor says 10 days, although many doctors suggest waiting three weeks or even longer. The doctors going with the shorter period may be operating on the theory that it’s good to keep the ductwork (the vas) open. Oh, and I was told that ejaculation is okay after five days.
- The other notable thing is that I am restricted from strenuous physical activity for 30 days. This is hard, since my wife and I are avid mountain bikers, and take multiple trips each year for snowboarding, canyoneering, etc. I can do short hikes now, and longer ones later (wifey has to carry the pack though!), but I was really going stir crazy for awhile.

Hi just stumbled upon your site..I recently just had a reversal done but was told no sex until 30days to prevent a blowout of the vas defferens. was your reversal a success?

Thanks Anon. I think I’ll be getting my sperm analysis next week, and will know more then about whether or not my surgery was a success.

hello do you have any knowledge as to the theory of a blow out of the vas defferens if sex is had too soon? its been about day 13 for me and i was told i should wait 3weeks to 30days after the post vasectomy..but its difficult:)

Sorry anon. Wish I could help but I really don’t have any further information. If you find anything out, please report back.
As for me, I’m getting my first test done later this week, so we’ll see if there are any swimmers then.

In your post you stated that ejac was ok after 5 days, where did you read or whom told you, I have my VR on 4 Apr and on 8 i had a wet dream, I am real worried that something might be have been injured or recovery impeaded. any info would really ease my worried, especially since it cost so much
Thanks

Hi Anon-
Agness discusses this at http://worthwhile.blogspot.com/2006/01/vasectomy-and-vasectomy-reversal.html
I’m not sure where else I’ve seen it. My doctor told me ejaaculation was okay after five days, and sex after ten, so I wouldn’t be too concerned.

All,
I had my VR on 4/16/2010 and have had no complications. Wife and I waited 2 weeks. My doc said 4, but I think he was being safe. My first doctor, Dr Wayne Hellmstrom, was way to expensive, but he is world renowned, and he told us in the consult that two weeks is sufficient. Hope this helps.

Our doctor was very confident in saying yesterday that we can recommence 1 week after the procedure as nothing can damage the work after this period. His concern was the pressure it would have on the scrotal area. I have also read that clearing the tubes regularly after this is good as it encourages good sperm priduction

My fiancée and myself had sex after six days then on the 8th day and after 15 days I just ejaculated on my own. Every time no pain on ejaculation but 10 mins after my testicles and kidneys seem to have a little discomfort . There is no fluid build up in my scrotum and the amount of what I hope is semen and sperm was ridiculous, I haven seen so much for years.
I hope everything has worked and that the slight discomfort is just the sperm squeezing past the new fresh joins in my tubes or vas deferens.
After the op my scrotum was in shock sitting really high and my usually big penis seemed to diss appear lol.
Hope this works, the money was just the price of a very cheap holiday so that’s ok.
If I can give any good advise is wear a jock strap all of the time and even in bed it really helps.
6 days for ejaculation is probably a little quick but I am an impatient guy and my woman was pestering me heehee u gotta love it.
Any. Info whether I have moved too quick would be a great help.

hi,
I had my opp 14 days ago. Again the doc said no sex for 30 days.
I lasted for only 3 days, again no real pain on ejaculation, but about 10 minuets later some discomfort.
my scrotum is now back to normal size thank god,
I have my first sperm check in 14 days,

Hi Andy,
I had my reversal on 4th May and felt comfortable to have sex 3 days post op too. Consultant reccomended to have sex after 1 week to flush out debri and keep the vas open and patent. I too had no discomfort on ejaculation, but me and the wife were amazed how much semen i have produced in such a short space of time. It used to be thick but now very watery. Let us know how the first sperm check goes.

Cheers Norry,
The Jock strap advice was sound. Its the best thing ive ever used for support. I bought 2 to trial and immediately felt comfortable and supported. Im no longer walking like John Wayne when im using it either. Ive also had a much better sleep too as i normally sleep on my sides, this was uncomfortable with my current underwear. Thank you for that advice. I wish i used them when i had my initial vasectomy.

I had the procedure on may 4th 2012, When laying down I feel great, but when I stand in one spot too long it feels like my junk wants to fall out! Is that normal after 7 days? I am afraid for my first ejaculation… don’t really want any pain to come out of it. My doctor really hasn’t communicated much on the matter on when I can start to clean out the build up.. I just know that I can’t do any sports for atleast 4 weeks!!!??? It’s killing me already..lol Any advise would be great, thanks

Hey Mike,
My consultant advice was to start having intercourse 7 days post op as long as i was comfortable. I only lasted 3 days as i had the same sensation as yourself. Intercourse was great and very intense – more than usual
I was anxious about climaxing but in the heat of the moment it didnt seem to bother me any more. Ejaculation was plentyfull and a watery consistency where my semen was normally thickened after my vasectomy.
I felt very reassured that ejaculation was pain free. Clearing my testicles of debri and keeping the vas (new) rejoin open and patent wouldnt be a problem. I had intercourse on day 5 too.
I would say – You know your body better than anyone. if you feel you want to masturbate or have intercourse with your partner then your the best judge for that. I wouldnt be too vigarious though on your first time (lol).
I also had my reversal on 4th may too. Hope any of this may help you.

10 days post reversal, found left testicle healing well and pain free but right testicle became painful with slight ooze and redness to surgical site. Discomfort felt like right testicle heavier than the left also radiating upto groin and painful on movement especially sitting up!
Visited Gp as suspected infection (Advised this may happen). Given Erythomycin antibiotics (my guardian angel lol) and feeling so much better after the weekend doses – clearly an infection but thought it was taking longer to heal on the affected side.
Bruising now also subsiding but the anti-inflammatories continued and a blessing too. Cant wait to get my self back on track. A bit gutted with setback though, but after the cost of the reversal i wasnt taking any chance.

Thanks leon, So day 8 was the day for me, nerve racking but got r’ done. My only concern was causing the tubes to split?? Not sure about it being more watery or not still seemed pretty thick. The athletic supporter is starting to be uncomfortable but all the stitching is doing really well. No redness or discharge. when is your follow up?
May 14th, 2012 at 1:21 pm
Hi Mike,
Ive just started to reduce the amount of time using the old Jock-strap today but find it most beneficial at bedtime when i sleep on my sides. My testicles need the support as the underwear let them sag..ouch! Back to supportive boxers and breifs by day, so i know im HEALING lol.
Im due a sperm analysis on 4.8.12. However if we get pregnant before this date i wont need to have it tested. I’m already been blessed with 3 children who are 11,12 and 15. I had my vasectomy when i was 29 (10 years ago) but we decided to have a change of heart and regret back last year. It would be great to have one more shot allbeit our final chance. If the reversal doesnt work then we wont be going any further. Our fate is in gods hands so to speak.
The tubes will be nicely healing after a week so no worries about splitting now your day 10 . Listen to your body, if your in pain then somethings not right. Im not being too vigorious with my wife at the moment lol… My after care advice was to keep the vas open to help prevent the joins from scarring which could potentially obstruct the reversal site. It is quite anxious on the first time and as long as it wasnt painfull then all is good below.
Where did you have your reversal to.
May 14th, 2012 at 2:34 pm
Portland Adventist a Dr. Kim did the procedure. I am supposed to go in on the 21st for check up but they did not indicate whether or not I need to bring a sample for them?? It’s not too much pain right now more of discomfort. I have a body pillow that helps me to sleep on my side with it folded in half between my legs.. very nice relief. It’s been really nice talking to someone about this. I appreciate all your great advice. I have a 12 yr old daughter with a prior marriage and my wife now, who I just married last June is wanting a family and she is 29 the end of this month and I will be 38 in July. I had my original surgery at age 30 for health reasons for my wife at that time. Very excited about this next chapter in our lives. thanks, for the chat, Mike
May 15th, 2012 at 3:38 am
Hey Mike,
Same here, i dont feel like im the only man in the world whos had a reversal…lol.
The body pillow is a really good idea – used to use my wifeas one, but since the op have had a no go zone. Missing spooning the wife at night though and visa-versa.
Im in Cardiff but had my reversal in Nottingham with Mr Lemberger. Too far to go back to Nottingham, so i just need to see the GP if any problems. Its just a post op check your having, the semen sample is in 3 months like me. I have to arrange mine myself. Im assuming yours is inclusive. Its all part of the aftercare for the package you paid for ! If your unsure i would give them a ring.
Nice to know where virtually the same age and had the vasectomy around the same age too..lol.
Going back to splitting the tubes yesterday, it would more likely happen now as a result of strenuous physical activity….lifting and pulling etc. This is why we have to avoid it for around 4 weeks post op. (forgot to add it on yesterday).
I hope the next chapter in our lives is positive and worth while. Its all down to us men at the moment….N0 pressure ….lol.
Feeling even better today; still off work but looking forward to being me again. Great chatting to you matey, take it easy and make the most of the T.L.C.

What kind of work do you do? I went back to work on the following monday morning with two full days rest. Monday and Tuesday were ok but on wednesday I couldn’t get out of bed….. Not fun! I have been on light duty at work, just been sitting at desk and occasionally walking around. Today has been alot better with discomfort. I am an athletic person and I play on two softball teams right now and it sucks not being able to play. Can’t wait to get back out on the field. Two and a half weeks left……. Well keep me posted on how it’s going and to when you will be expecting….. Thanks again for all your good info.

Hey Mike,
I’m a qualified staff nurse in Intensive care here in South Wales in the U.K. We do a fair bit of manual handling and walking .
I had been on annual leave for the first week post op and was due to return to work the following monday. It was the infection that stopped me going back because i was still walking like good old John Wayne and in a fair bit of discomfort..lol.
. Couldnt look after myself let alone my patients.
I couldnt even bend without experiencing pain in the old testicle and groin
We work 12.5 hour shifts and spend most of that time on our feet with the exception of our 3x 30 min breaks for the day.
I do alot of running so im getting frustrated too especially as were in spring heading into summer over here.
It would be good to stay in touch with you if you want too, especially since were virtually the opposite end of the planet.
It would be good to now everything had been successfull your end too.
Dont know if were permitted to leave our email addresss on here or whether the moderator would help us out.

No, I won’t approve comments with email addresses in the portion that will be publicly posted. This is to protect you from spammers that crawl sites to harvest email addresses. If you want to share your email address I’d suggest writing it out like myname myisp.com. Leave out the @ and I wouldn’t even put in AT in it’s place. People are usually smart enough to figure out that you mean myname@myisp.com.

Well right now the pain is way down… Only when I stand in one spot for a short time does the discomfort increase. Is it normal to have one nut 3x the size of the other at this point? Do you have a facebook account? That is a good way to communicate if you have access to that? I am very interested in keeping up on progress with someone who will be going through basically every process that my wife and I will be going through..
May 18th, 2012 at 10:00 am
Hey Mike,
Not unless it was 3x bigger before the op and is normal for you, otherwise get it checked out. men do have one testicle bigger than the other. However if its new for you and wasnt their before then i would definately visit the Gp. You could be developing a hydrocele which is a build up of fluid in the testicle. This wont effect your reversal but can be uncomfortable. Saying that your due to see your consultant Monday so that sounds like good timing matey.
Where 14 days post op now, im all settled down and even ditched the jock ..lol. Now its the full on to keep the tubes flushed lol. My wife cant complain and use the old headache joke anymore – Its sooooooo old.
let the fun Commence! lol Hehe
I do have facebook but in all honesty i dont use it that much. Tend to use MSN more. If you put in my first name and Chamberlain im sure youll find me. Think my pic is me and the kids after a funrun. Ill except you then forward you my email address.
Hope everything is ok for you on Monday, take it easy fella and enjoy your weekend.
