Pre-conception doctor’s visit

I went to the doctor today to have a pre-conception visit since it's been about a month since Rich's vasectomy reversal . I wanted his go-ahead to start trying to get pregnant before trying in earnest. I know that lots of women get pregnant before ever seeing the doctor, but I want to be sure to get him to sign off, since I've only recently stopped taking medication to control sciatic pain. My visit went well and I'm thrilled that he said we can go ahead and start trying (and although according to Taking Charge of Your Fertility I'm not fertile yet, we'll be having great celebratory sex tonight!). I talked to the doctor about what I should be doing in order to insure a healthy pregnancy. He wants me to start taking prenatal vitamins now, before I conceive. He suggested that we not use lubricants during sex, since they can have a mild anti-spermicidal quality. He suggested that if we do need a lube, we use egg whites or a product called Pre-Seed . Since the idea of using raw egg whites isn't that enticing, I think we'll go with Pre-Seed. The doctor also encouraged me to stop drinking wine (I like to have a glass or two on the weekend). I can't eat sushi anymore, which is a shame, but the mercury in fish is a risk. No more deli foods either, since they pose a listeria risk. He also suggested that Rich get his sperm test as soon as possible, to verify the effectiveness of the vasectomy reversal. The doctor suggested that Rich not soak in hot baths, hot tubs, or saunas, and that he switch to boxers instead of briefs. We don't want to overheat his "boys!" I forgot to ask a few important questions — I should have gone prepared with a list. My sister has a blood clotting disorder that resulted in her having several miscarriages. Should I worry about that? And I didn't ask about exercise. We like to mountain bike; should I stop as soon as I get pregnant, or can I ride during the first trimester, or even beyond? What about my cat? I've heard that pregnant women shouldn't be around cats, but we've got two - and one sleeps with me. Technorati tags:

  • Just curious if you thought there was a difference in the orgasm feeling pre and post reversal. Was it the same, better, worse, etc?

  • Hmm, well first of all, I’ll assume this question is aimed at me, the hubby. :-) I haven’t really noticed any difference, but then, it’s not something I’ve been paying close attention to either. I will say that TTC sex is great!

  • Hmm, I had a vasectomy recently and thought it was different, less in a way, not the buildup but the release part, hmmm, the balls part. Then again, who knows, the whole thing was traumatic to the boys.

So, you are saying it’s no different?

Also curious, when they reconnect the vas, are your testicles higher than before?

    Any other post reversal differences?

  • I really haven’t noticed any difference, in terms of size or how things feel.
