Risks of multiple birth pregnancies

Earlier this month, we reported that doctors at John Hopkins had determined that sperm harvesting during vasectomy reversal was not cost effective. Today's post highlights recent comments by one of the study's authors. What interested me here were some of the comments on higher order pregancies:

"…the pregnancy rates had increased since earlier cost analysis reports (29.5 vs. 34.4%). However, importantly rate of higher order pregnancies had also increased from 31.1 to 34%. This increase was observed in spite of guidelines which have been propagated in attempt to decrease this incidence. Dr Thomas then highlighted the importance of this phenomenon. There is a 7 x increase in maternal mortality with multiple gestation pregnancy as compared to singletons. Perinatal mortality is 4 fold singleton and 6 fold higher for triplets or higher."

Definitely something to be aware of.
