Thinking ahead: Freezing sperm for IVF

So what if the vasectomy reversal doesn’t work? In certain situations, sperm can be extracted for freezing, to provide an option for future in vitro fertilization (IVF). Whether or not this can be done depends on the type of vasectomy reversal performed. If it’s a vasovasectomy, they cannot recover sperm during the surgery (apparently there are other ways to do a surgical extraction prior to the vasectomy reversal though). If you are having a vasoepididymostomy, they might be able to recover sperm. If those big words throw you, check out this previous post defining these two types of vasectomy reversal.

This adds to the cost of vasectomy reversal. The rates quoted by my doctor are $250 for freezing, $250 annual storage fee and $120+ for California mandated blood tests (HIV, hepatitis, etc.). Of course, that’s nothing if you end up doing IVF, which costs $10,000+!
